Recount Doesn't Change Close Greenville Council Race

More Video...

A recount will not change the outcome of a close city council race in Greenville.

Pitt County election officials on Friday conducted the recount for the District 4 seat, as requested by Terri Williams.

After a canvass this week, Williams lost the race to Rick Smiley by just 11 votes.

But in the recount, Smiley picked up one vote. The tabulation now stands at 1,566 votes for Smiley, compared to Williams with 1,554.

A close election race just got closer Tuesday, and there will be a recount to decide the winner. Candidates for Greenville's District 4 Council seat watched as Pitt County election judges counted the provisional ballots Tuesday morning.

After last week's election, Terri Williams lost by just 13 votes giving her challenger, Rick Smiley, the edge. After Tuesday's count, Williams gained two votes and now the margin is just 11 votes. We spoke to both candidates who are surprised the decision will come down to a complete recount Friday.

If Smiley wins, it could change the dynamic of the council as he along with Calvin Mercer, Marion Blackburn, and Richard Croskery could have the majority of votes on the Greenville council.

There appears to be a recount in at least one close race from Tuesday night.

The Pitt County Board of Elections says they received a request from Greenville District 4 candidate Terri Williams for the recount.

In unofficial returns, Williams lost by just 13 votes to Rick Smiley. Both would be newcomers to city council, if elected.

Elections Director Dave Davis no time and date has been set for the recount, since vote totals could change after provisional and supplemental absentee ballots are counted next week. He says once results are made official, candidates can then ask for recounts.

District 4 is in east Greenville. Incumbent Calvin Mercer decided to seek the at-large council seat, which he won.
