RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina lawmakers are set to approve a measure barring the state from expanding Medicaid under the federal health care overhaul.
The state House and Senate are expected to vote Tuesday for the last time on a bill that makes clear North Carolina neither wants to expand its Medicaid program or run an online health insurance marketplace. States have the option of doing both through the Affordable Care Act, but Republicans who control the North Carolina legislature say they can't trust Washington to pay for the bulk of the Medicaid expansion in future years.
Republican Gov. Pat McCrory also says he doesn't support the expansion, which would provide government health insurance to about 500,000 low-income citizens. He is expected to sign the GOP-backed bill when it reaches his desk.
