Rep. LaRoque Faces Primary Challenger

One of the most controversial state lawmakers from Eastern Carolina is going to face a primary challenger this May.

Republican representative Stephen LaRoque represents Lenoir, Wayne and Greene counties in District Ten, and is in his third term.

Tuesday John Bell, a businessman from Wayne County announced he will seek the Republican nomination.

Bell, the Vice Chairman of the Wayne County Republican Party, says he is campaigning to bring quality and respectable conservative leadership to North Carolina District Ten, while Laroque says he welcomes the challenge.

Bell says, "I know Representative Laroque. Everyone is aware of the issues that he got into. Everyone has seen the news articles. This campaign is not about what he has done. This campaign is about what I bring to the table. The merit, the morals, the values. The ethical business practices I have."

Laroque says, "Competition is something I never run away from. Certainly you like to have an election, especially as an incumbent, that you wouldn't have a primary that folks would believe what you've done up there is a good job."

I wonder Spanky is? I hope I'm insulting him/her but this person is either a RINO rah rah, a dupe or paid. Not one claim Spanky states is correct. Ask around the Leg and you'll learn why he's in office, why he's Rules Chair, how he got credit for bills he nearly sabotaged, how the Senate, time and again, had to do damage control for the House preventing good law from being intro'd or voted on. Dems used to like him when he held this seat in '04 because he nearly always voted with him. He was one of Spkr and GOP traitor Richard Morgan's 'team players' and went along to get along. Tillis gave him the Rules gavel as a part of the deal of making Tillis Speaker. A bad elected Repub can be worse that a bad or good elected Dem.

LaJoke is not man enough to attend Bell's announcement so he sent his Legislative Assistant with a video camera!! How tacky, if he wanted to know it word for word he should have attended - once again he took the shady way out! He talks of his running on his record, he must mean the record of investigations and ethical concerns! Bell in 2012!

Agreed. Stephen is too irrational to hold public office.

Agreed. I just wonder how many taxpayer dollars have been tied to his many lawsuits against anyone who dares oppose him. He acts like a spoiled brat.

LaJoke may have never run away from competition, but he runs away from the truth when it comes to his shadiness. Elect Bell '12.

If Stephen LaRoque thinks he has done a good job, he is only fooling himself. I just wonder how long it will be before that sniveling coward starts trashing John Bell. He can't win an election on merits, because he has none. I only hope by now the public sees what a disgrace LaRoque is. I will support John Bell.

LaRoque has sponsored and passed more legislation for the good of NC and eastern NC than any other legislator in the past 8 years.... and all in 2 years. The smack talkers don't pay attention or follow what good he is really doing. The real problem is that the Democratic Establishment hates him for his backbone and the fact that he calls it like it really is. Bell is a Democrat masquerading as a Republican. He is a flip flopper. His campaign advisor is a Democrat and is in cahoots with Walter Dalton. Just put a fundraiser on for him. Get the facts people.

With all due respect, it's just democrats that despise him, there are republicans that are sick of him as well. I am one of them. As for telling it the way it is, notice that he hasn't done too much of that lately. I wonder who in Raleigh asked him to keep quiet.

For your information, I believe LaRoque did have some Democratic support that crossed over. As a lifelong GOP member, I have been embarrased by his arrogance and his antics. LaRoque talked trash about Art Pope when he was beaten by Starling a few years ago. Now he's buddies with Pope. It seems to me LaRoque is a flip flopper that is conservative only when it helps his own causes. I hate to disagree with you, but LaRoque will not get my vote ever again.

LOL LaRoque is Lenoir County's version of JR Ewing. He is a man who will step on anyone to get his way.
