South Carolina Republicans are choosing who they want to challenge President Barack Obama this fall.
All four remaining GOP presidential hopefuls have been making the rounds of polling stations and diners today to make final appeals. Newt Gingrich says he's "the only practical conservative vote" for Republicans who don't want to see Mitt Romney become the nominee.
With polls showing Gingrich narrowing the gap on Romney in South Carolina, the former Massachusetts governor appears to be preparing for an extended fight. He's now agreed to attend two more debates next week in Florida. The first is Monday in Tampa, followed by a second on Thursday in Jacksonville. Florida's primary is next up after South Carolina, on Jan. 31.
Rick Santorum appears headed for a setback, after being declared the winner in Iowa's caucuses today and finishing ahead of Gingrich in New Hampshire.
Meanwhile, Ron Paul is looking ahead to coming contests. He calls South Carolina "very important" but not "do or die" for his campaign. His campaign is buying ad time in Nevada and Minnesota, which hold caucuses next month.
