Pitt County says it needs $2.7 million to meet current goals of education and safety, and county officials say they don't expect to cover the cost by raising taxes.

During a Greenville-Pitt County Chamber power lunch meeting Tuesday, County Commissioners Chairman Jimmy Garris said the biggest education project is an estimated $750,000 thousand dollars. He says there should be more jail space at the detention center which will cost an estimated $800,000.

"Our detention center is getting in the over crowded state. We need to go on and expand that. We have the room, the physical room, but we need to be able to hire the personnel to manage that E block," said Garris

Garris says replacing county vehicles is also on the to-do list with an estimated $600,000 pricetag. He is also looking at a cost of living adjustment for employees which is estimated at $600,000.
