Obama To Target Rising College Tuition Costs

President Barack Obama has put colleges and universities on notice to control tuition costs or face losing federal money. Schools are waiting to hear how big a stick Obama plans to wield.

He's expected to reveal details in a speech today at the University of Michigan focused on college affordability. It will cap a three-day post-State of the Union trip to promote different components of his economic agenda in politically important states.

During his speech Tuesday night, Obama hinted at some the changes ahead. College costs have risen dramatically in recent years.

Last fall, the average cost to attend a four-year public university went up more than 8 percent.

See, here's the thing...Obama makes a generalized statement to the US Public DEMANDING colleges to 'control tuition costs, or face losing federal money." He needs to provide a complete BREAKDOWN of those costs allowances per college/university, as he throws out that 'glove'. He really thinks most of the 'general public' cannot understand how much it costs to run these colleges (think supplies, electronics, teaching materials, electricity to run the shops, maintenance, cleaning, security, teacher re-certifications, academic accreditation requirments, etc...), the difference in scholarships per college, and who qualifies, teacher salaries, administrative salaries (never mind he makes the highest salary in the U.S.), and apply to the these colleges, based on needs/locations. Instead of making a broad statement that sounds grand, if he were serious,he would spend his time studying each and every college and university in the U.S. to determine each and every fee/tuition cost and GET BACK TO US.

Like I said, voting for someone BECAUSE they are black is as RACIST as NOT voting for someone because they are black. THE WORST OF ALL IS IGNORANT PEOPLE WHO LEARN NOTHING OF THE PERSON THEY ARE VOTING FOR AND NOT LEARNING FROM THE MISTAKE OF VOTING THAT FOOL IN! HE HAS DONE NOTHING BUT MAKE THE PROBLEM WORSE FOOLS!!!

No they won't. They've already been bought and paid for by the Democrats.

Barlow, you speak with forked tongue. It is not too late for Obama to worry about "controlling costs". The spending spree he and his party has been on for three years has caused the cost of everything to go up, gas, food, medical, and yes tuition. You liberals cannot have your cake and eat it too.

Nobody is getting their college paid for by the government. The article is not even about that, it is about controlling costs. Something you all want, unless it comes out of Obama's mouth I guess. That has been the problem. The Repugs just can't take "Yes" for an answer. Even when he offered to cut medicare, when the Democrats didn't, the Repugs said NO. This isn't about debt or defecits or cutting costs for Republicans. It is about hating Obama. Sad, all the way around.

If you can, read and comprehend the posts Barlow. One person said college should be free (most likely a democrat) and some people responded to that post. Other than that the posts are all talking about the issue in the article, Obama threatening to take away federal funding for colleges or universities that raise tuition costs. You spin has been proven WRONG once again. If you comprehend next maybe, just maybe, you will not make a fool of yourself but I doubt it, acting a fool is your specialty!!

First, the democrats voted for Obamacare which cut 600 billion from medicaid...do you remember that with you dimentia? Second, you president is doing everything in his power to raise costs, have you seen gas prices since he was elected? How about grocery prices, I mean even libterds eat food right? And that debt thing, you heard of our credit rating dropping to AA? I know dimentia affects short term but that wasn't that long ago...they kind of base it on the fact our debt is growing and not being paid off. In fact the king of the libterds borrowed money from the Chinese to pay the interrest if that makes any sense. Sort of like getting a credit card to pay the interrest on another card. I am sure that is how you do it at home. I am sure that first card is the one you actually pay the interrest on the very first card you got from 6th grade...not sure what year you got it in since you said 4 years. What is sad, is you defense of what you will not ever be able to defend, voting on the worst president since Carter. I am guessing you voted for him too. You are defending the party that is getting to get thrown out of DC just like in NC, people are fed up with it. Polls show he is done like Purdue...only you cannot accept you failure as a citizen to vote for a worthwhile leader. Suck it up, move on, its over.

After reading most of the comments on this issue, I see now why this once great country has to to hell in a hand basket. So many of you want the government to give you everything without you working for it. This is not what made us one time the greatest county on earth. It was the hard work and sacrafices made by citizens who want to have better life. What incentative does one have to bust their butts to get ahead if they can just set back and let the government give it to them. I have worked all my life and i'll be darm if you get anymore of my hard earned money because you do not want to work hard and sacrafice to get what you want. Get a life, your free ride is going to end very quickly, and then what will you do, move to Russia?

I have to agree whole heartedly, that is a problem. I have to blame it on the parents that gave Jr/Ms everything they wanted. So anyone that is a parent who bought you kid everything they asked for, instead of giving them what needed is the problem. If you bought your kids a new car to go in school, and they paid nothing for it, you are the problem. With the silver spoon feeding you did, you left out learning about personal responsibility, a lesson that is very valuable. I don't have any entitled kids in my entire family. 4 out of 5 have college degrees and all of them were paid for by us, not our parents. That was a given. Our kids are going to school the same way, on their own dime driving their own cars they bought and living near campus on their own dime....just how can they do that? They worked while in HS and saved money for college, funny, just like I did. I guess the don't have much time to drink beer and party....they work. So if you think that I now owe you an education because you think so, consider, I don't. I owe you nothing like "Concerned" above expressed, nothing you have not earned on your own. You will find that is the learning experience that will help you in life. Just consider, if you are spoon fed, you will end up like Barlow and Lavon....you don't want to be like them, you have read their posts...

To ECU Graduate, you tell me two things he has done for the good of US citizens. What kind of "freebees" did he give you. He has done more harm to hurt the common, working citizen than any President in history. You sound like you are a member of his "welfare" clan.

Obama just pandering for more votes. I paid every penny that was required for my kids to attend college. Has Obama offered to give me any of my money back of course not. But he want to rescind the college loans for kids in exchange for their votes. Heck if he would cut me a check for the 150 grand I spent I would vote for him. No not really I would rather be broke before I would stoop that low.

He just like this "freebee" to Food Stamps. Get them and you automatically entitled to four years of college at tax payers expenses. Just like the free cell phone. Hurry Novemember.

It is none of his business what college costs. If people do not want to pay the price and do not see the benefit for the expense then DO NOT GO!! If you want to see prices drop....have a year or 2 when when college enrollment drops to 1/2. Obama is on track to add over $6 trillion to our debt in only 4 years. He does not need to lecture anyone about costs.

To quote Chancellor Ballard from the Chancellor's View link on the ECU website: "ECU has lost $102 million in state funding over the last four years." This is why tuition has gone up. If Obama wants tuition to go even higher, maybe he should try taking away Federal funding, though tuition can never increase enough to make up for these State or Federal shortfalls.

ECU Alumni myself. I can tell you why the price is going up. Have you seen the new buildings, student recreations and additions to the med-dental school? Well, someone is going to pay back money taken in loans. Though there were some contributors its not enough. So when ECU announces another addition to the school, ask yourself, how much will this raise tuition? As long as ECU wants to grow the school, remember the growing pains are going to cost.
