Nielsen: Obama's Smallest State Of The Union Address

The interest among television viewers in President Barack Obama's annual State of the Union addresses is dwindling.

The Nielsen measurement company said Wednesday an estimated 37.8 million people watched Obama's speech the night before on one of the 14 networks airing it. Obama's audience for the speech has dropped each year, from a high of 52.4 million in 2009.

Obama narrowly missed President George W. Bush's least-watched State of the Union. Bush's last one was seen by 37.5 million people in 2008.

The largest individual audience for Obama's speech was NBC's, more than 8 million. On cable, MSNBC beat CNN for the first time for second place behind Fox News Channel.

    Funny , GOP , Tea Party , loving Republican Fox News viewers. Turned on Fox News to watch the State of the Union address more then any other TV station. Fox News Channel topped the cable news competition by far for the speech on Tuesday night. ' Fox Broad Cast News ' (5.3 million). Fox ' The Network ' was watched by 3.8 million viewers with 1.1 million in news’ target demographic of 25-54-year-olds during the speech, which ran from 9:11 p.m. to 10:17 p.m. MSNBC bested rival CNN among total viewers – 2.8 million to 2.6 million. That marks the first time MSNBC has surpassed CNN for a State of the Union speech. But CNN still topped MSNBC in the demo averaging 1.0 million viewers to MSNBC’s 818,000. Obama spoke for more than an hour (but less than 90 minutes) FOX led the coverage of the State of the Union, which is atypical " Fox News Channel often outperforms the broadcast network's coverage of presidential addresses " I myself watched Fox News but I turned to watch something else 4 minutes after the Obama Con Man started ranting. I did not want to waist my time!

    President Obama doesn't have many fans in the Republican party? No-who would have thought that? DUH! In fact, neither Gingrich nor Romney have many fans in the Republican party! The voter turn out in SC was looooooowww! That just wasn't a headline here.

      Obama doesn't have many fans in the American public either...its not personal, we just don't like dismal failures who spend money like water.

    I've never seen so many jump to "conclusions" from an article that says nothing to support them. It really shows how desparate the GOP is. This article says NOTHING except fewer people watched the SOTU. That's all! How many people watched the last SC-GOP debate? Did the number of viewers tell us who the voters were going to support-of course not! Now I know how the GOP can take one fact and twist it to claim it means something entirely different-without a single fact to back it. One poll has come out. 91% of those viewers agree with Obama.

    Where are the figures on how many watched the last GOP debate? Hmmm.

      I just cannot respond to you post. I wanted to belittle you and thought, and this is a person that probably voted for Obama asking the question. And I pondered, what kind of news do people watch at night, Bill Maher? Please don't drive a car in your condition.....

Then consider the state of SC and the debates held on MLK Bday;

      Now, this was an easy to find link to determine how many watched the debate which as absolutely, nothing to do with the price of milk in Zimbabwe in November during a rainstorm. Same comparison...idiots abound...and yet they will post it for all to see how far they got in the 6th grade. FOX News Channel’s debate this past Monday night (MLK holiday) in South Carolina attracted 5.5 million viewers with 1.6 million in the 25-54 demographic – even with the holiday, FNC’s debate beat the last debate held by NBC’s Meet The Press in both total viewers and in the demo. It also beat CBS’s last debate in the 25-54 demo.

    Here is how Obama is doing, figures from when he took office and now - 12 million more americans on food stamps (white, black, purple, orange, green doesn't matter) - national debt 10.26 trillion when he took office, 15.23 trillion now - gas $1.84 per gallon January 2009, $3.39 per gallon now - unemployment 7.6% then, 8.5% now. I guess that must be the hope and change he talked about, well I don't want it!!! His SOTU was nothing more than a campaign speech and most of the time every campaign speech sounds good - republican or democrat!!

      I am sick of you and Gingrich's food stamp slamming. Many of the new people requiring food stamps are employed former middle class people who have had their hours or wages cut. All you are proving is that Obama is trying to help them and give them reliev while the GOP would let them starve-just like they would have let GM go under! Anyone who thinks helping people eat or feed their children during a recession needs to examine their own heart instead of criticizing those who actually care! I remember another man who fed the hungry-He did it with 3 fish and didn't ask for a drug test!

    Empty promises just as he spoke in the previous years. We can not continue to run up the national debt by kicking the nations problems down the road for the next president to fix.

    President Obama knows what's good for the people and his speech showed it. The Republicans need to start helping instead of attacking him for the sake of the people of this country. Wonderful speech by a great president.

      You voted for him just because of his skin color and we all know it. You keep thinking he is the greatest President of all, stuck in denial of the true facts he's not even American, no one can even remember him from college, or growing up, don't you think if someone we knew had became famous we would be telling it all over "saying I knew him". While I continue work hard and pay for you to live, your just sitting siting at home in your pajamas waiting for a handout.
