Nash Co. Commissioners Approve Sanderson Farms Chicken Plant 5-2

Plans for a poultry plant in Nash County are moving forward after county commissioners passed a resolution Monday night, 5 votes to 2.

The Nash County commissioners made the decision after a public hearing Monday night. Officials say the Sanderson Farms Poultry Plant in Nash County would bring an estimated 1,100 jobs to the area. Residents at the hearing were divided. Those who support the plant sited more jobs, those opposed said the plant would damage the environment.

"With this plant, comes a very negative impact on water, on air, on communities, on public health, for a large area," said Larry Baldwin who is opposed to the construction of the plant.

"We need jobs, and I believe this will help our economics in Rocky Mount, North Carolina and Nash County," said plan supporter Ken Sikes.

The meeting began at 6:00 p.m., and Nash County Manager Robert Murphy tells us the resolution passed just before 10:00 p.m.
