Debate over the constitutional amendment on the ballot next week continues to heat up with the NAACP speaking out Thursday.
The civil rights organization met at the Greater Joy Baptist Church in Rocky Mount to once again urge voters to reject the measure that seeks to define in the constitution that marriage between one man and one woman is the only legal domestic union in the state. State NAACP president Reverend William Barber calls the proposal discriminatory and an attack on the civil rights movement.
"Now you want to ask this state by popular vote to vote on the rights of a minority..that is a dangerous precedent..it sets up a dangerous precedent," said Reverend Barber.
Barber claims documents on the origin of the amendment were to drive a wedge between gays and blacks-- two key democratic constituencies.
