NC Major-Party Governor Hopefuls Hold First Debate

Democrat Walter Dalton and Republican Pat McCrory stuck to tried themes during their first debate of the general election campaign for North Carolina governor.

The major-party candidates met face to face Saturday in Wilmington at a forum put on by the North Carolina Bar Association at its annual meeting.

McCrory said that Dalton would only extend what he called the failed policies of outgoing Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue if elected and that an outsider was needed to rev up the state economy.

Dalton said voters needed to look no further than the Republican-led Legislature to see what a McCrory governorship would look like, calling it an extreme agenda that helps the privileged few.

Both candidates provided few examples designed to differentiate themselves from either Perdue or GOP lawmakers.
