A trial court judge has blocked from taking effect a state law preventing members of the North Carolina Association of Educators from having their dues removed automatically from paychecks until a lawsuit is heard.
Wake County Superior Court Judge Paul Gessner issued a preliminary injunction Wednesday. He ruled the state's largest teacher lobbying group would suffer irreparable harm if the new law is enforced and that they're likely to win at trial on constitutional grounds.
The association sued following the after-midnight session by the Republican-led General Assembly in early January in which the House completed an override of Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue's veto of the dues bill.
A GOP leader said the bill was payback for NCAE's attempts to persuade some Democrats to vote against last year's budget.
