NC Congressmen React To Debt Ceiling Debacle

After 16 days of uncertainty, the argument to vote or not to vote, and a presidential signature, the nation looks forward to the next looming deadline for Congress.

Before the new deadline sparks fresh debate, eastern North Carolina congressmen are weighing in on the recent debt ceiling debacle.

"For more than two weeks, this nation was held hostage by the political theater of the right-wing faction of Republicans in Congress, said Democratic Congressman G.K. Butterfield. "This bill's passage ends the standoff that brought Washington and the nation to a halt. I sincerely hope Republicans have learned that jeopardizing the prosperity of this nation is both extremely irresponsible and an unacceptable way to govern. Americans and North Carolinians deserve better and will be watching closely when we revisit these issues early next year."

Republican Congressman Walter B. Jones noted in his statement he was the only member of Congress to vote against every debt ceiling increase in the last 10 years.

"While I support the effort to reopen the government, the last thing Washington needs is permission to continue its reckless spending habits when the national debt is an astonishing 17 trillion dollars," said Jones. "Furthermore, this proposal does nothing to address the skyrocketing costs of health insurance that Eastern North Carolinians are seeing every day under Obamacare. Premiums will continue to rise, families will continue to receive cancellation notices, employers will continue reducing hours, and the federal government takeover of our health care system will go on."

The bill's passage in both the Senate and the House clears the way for government spending to continue at current levels through January 15th.

A new debt ceiling debate is in store approaching the February 7th deadline when the Treasury will need new guidelines for borrowing.
