Competing sides in the North Carolina marriage referendum on Tuesday's ballot are getting last-minute cash from national groups for and against gay marriage and even a movie comedian.
Campaign finance reports filed in recent days with the State Board of Elections show actor Zach Galifianakis gave $3,000 to the Coalition to Protect North Carolina Families, which opposes the amendment.
Galifianakis grew up in Wilkesboro and attended North Carolina State University.
The Coalition reported receiving $125,000 from a political action committee connected to the Human Rights Campaign.
The group Vote FOR Marriage NC said the National Organization for Marriage gave it $125,000 and First Baptist Church in Charlotte donated $36,500.
Board records through April 21 showed the Coalition spending nearly $2 million -- almost double what Vote FOR Marriage had spent.
