Marriage Amendment Opponents Hold Money Lead

Opponents of a proposed constitutional amendment limiting marriage in North Carolina outraised supporters of the amendment by a nearly 2-to-1 margin heading into the final days of the referendum campaign.

The anti-amendment Coalition to Protect North Carolina Families told the State Board of Elections this week it had raised nearly $2.3 million since it began raising money late last fall until April 23. Vote FOR Marriage NC reported raising almost $1.2 million.

Coalition campaign manager Jeremy Kennedy said the group has received donations from 9,500 donors, most of them individuals. Vote FOR Marriage reports receiving fewer than 800 separate donations.

Both sides in the amendment clash are benefiting from out-of-state groups and wealthy individual donors for and against gay marriage. Early vote for the May 8 primary concludes Saturday.
