Lawmakers Look At Racial Justice Act, Maybe Gas Tax

The North Carolina Legislature is back at work in Raleigh after the Thanksgiving holiday.

They're poised to consider a bill that would eliminate a 2-year-old law giving prisoners the ability to use statistics to persuade a judge they're on death row because of racial bias.

On Monday a Senate committee is expected to consider a House bill that would essentially repeal the 2009 Racial Justice Act. Only one Senate floor vote is needed to send the bill to Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue. She signed the 2009 bill into law.

Before they go home Tuesday, lawmakers also could consider changes to the state gasoline tax. Without changing it, the tax will rise on Jan. 1 by 4 cents to nearly 39 cents a gallon.

the sooner we start paying more for gas the sooner people will start to conserve more and then we'll start to put an end to selling our country to the middle eastern countries

I stopped posting that DNC nonsense then I grew up. Its never enough as it will be spent before its even collected. Its this trend that bothers me and other taxpayers. However, if you want to pay more since you are in that 1%, just send the check in. For the rest of us, we have had enough. Now, if you can explain why we have income taxes, gas taxes and property taxes and other states have none or little of it, then we will post in your favor. Go online and try to figure out why...I can't, it just makes no sense.

Yea, and who isn't conserving as much as possible now. As a single income family who gets no 'help', and the 'bread winners' job is almost 50 miles away, what choice do WE have other than pay for gas at what ever price and do with out food or medicines so that there is gas in our vehicle to go to work. And we are single income not by choice, but by disability, and choosing to raise our children by being a stay home mother when things were good meant I had to forfeit any possibility of disability funds.

If 30% of your income goes to Gas, Why dont you move closer to where you work or get a more fuel efficient car. Dont blame the government for your poor financial decisions. A higher gas tax will make roads better, and help smart people like you to spend 31% of their income on gas since you have no control over your personal consumption.

We are already in the top teir in the nation for gas taxes. Currently they are installing a median in the middle of Havelock that was taken out by the DOT 30 years ago under the idea that it was a safety hazard adn removing it would increase traffic flow efficency. They are now putting it back in stating that the number of accidents Justifies it. However if you ask for the data, they don't have it to prove their point. Same thing is occurring in Hampstead. The installation of a median that is unnecessary and unwanted. along 70 just on the west side of New Bern they installed a bypass that goes from 70 to 17 just south of New Bern. This accomplished little, but the even bigger waste was the two ramps they built that were abandoned to a redesign AFTER all the dirt was hauled in, packed, and graded, and the bed prepared for asphalt. Mean while the Highway 17 four lane project is AGAIN over budget and over due. What is my point? The NCDOT wastes massive amounts of funds on unnecessary projects. I refuse to pay more in taxes when what I do pay is so badly mismanaged!

Um Mike, why don't you fix all of america's problems, seriously dude do you think it is as easy as you make it out to be. I cannot afford a new or another car, and you think jobs are so easy to find? Maybe you have it good and easy but for most of us, we struggle, that is why we are in a recession, and of course, we all have been blessed by you and your response. I assure you that you out of touch with reality, or your the top 1 percent that has no money worries and seems to have all the answers....good for you

Already 30 percent of my income goes to gasoline each month, thats right, 30 percent. And I know so many of you are in the same boat...some worse, and these yahoos in washington don't know why we are in a recession, with Insurance and the prpane/electric/ water companys getting more and more every month, when is any politician gonna relize enough is enough. I can assure you that the Prez, and democrat or republician does not care one bit for the middle class, All the politicians and their buddies get richer while I go year after year with no raise. Somebody please look out for the middle class. MY motto is like many others, VOTE THEM ALL OUT NO MATTER WHAT PARTY THEY ARE IN, GIVE SOMEBODY ELSE A CHANCE, AND IF THEY DO THE SAME VOTE THEM OUT TOO!!!!!

What is the point in tolls if they are just going to allow the gas tax to go up. We need change next year. Any state politician that backs tolls, gas tax increases(that fund a corrupt state DOT), and any tax increase for that matter should be voted out. The motto next year should be "out with the old in the new".

duh, aint that what just happened last year. the new got in after 120 years of democrap rule. that is why the state is in this mess. cant blame the conservatives for this, when dems had control of house and senate for over 120 years and conservatives for just barley a year!!! takes more time to unscrew the mess from the dems.

We have high gas taxes to pay for highway use. People from Virginia and South Carolina gas up before they leave so they do not have to pay more for gas. Some in this state living close to either state and others traveling wait and buy gas in other states to save money. This makes the rest of us foot most of the road taxes. Also Stores close to other states lose buisness because their gas is high. They also sell less drinks and other things because travelers buy those things at the stores they stopped at. Virginia, New Jersy and other states collect money from everyone crossing some of their bridges. Most of ours are free because the senators think we are making it up with gas taxes. New York and a few other states thought they'd get money by taxing the rich's income more. The Rich moved to other states and now they get little taxes from the rich. (Some times one ought to think out ideas before we make them law. Gas was under $3.00 in a couple of gas stations in S.C. and around $3.05 most places. When I left N.C. this Friday the lowest I saw around home was $3.39 Do you reckon I filled up before leaving S.C.?

It's humorous to see how many 99%-ers THINK they are part of the 1%. They have a nasty surprise coming when their benefits and 401k's vanish and they find themselves living in a police state. The rich hate them too and are just using them, but they don't see it.

ntc, I sure did! (Lib-Terd) 1) Combination of the words Liberal and Terd (see also: Libterd, libturd, libnerd, libsurd, libdiot, libored) 2) The result when a tree hugger successfully mates with a tree and the offspring is born with an extra chromosome. 3) Any helpless society that must always be liberated by the blood and sweat of others yet are too arrogant and stupid to realize that they owe their entire existance to others.
