Two governors -- one from North Carolina and another from Virginia -- didn't attend Gov. Pat McCrory's public inauguration as initially planned.

Participants at Saturday's event in Raleigh were told former North Carolina Gov. Jim Holshouser was in the hospital. The 78-year-old Holshouser was the state's first Republican governor in the 20th century, taking office 40 years ago. Neither McCrory's office nor Holshouser business partner Ernie Pearson had more details.

McCrory also said during his speech Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell didn't attend because his plane got fogged in. McDonnell was chairman of the Republican Governors Association when McCrory got elected in November.

Other former governors attending Saturday were Democrats Beverly Perdue and Mike Easley and Republican Jim Martin. No reason was given for the absence of Democrat Jim Hunt.
