A campaign finance advocacy group is asking North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall to investigate the lobbying ties of Gov. Pat McCrory and a member of his cabinet.
A letter sent Friday to Marshall by Democracy North Carolina recounts news reports from The Associated Press about the relationship between sweepstakes games operators and Moore & Van Allen, a Charlotte law and lobbying firm where McCrory worked until just days before taking office. Those lobbying clients also made political donations to McCrory's campaign.
The letter also references stories by The News & Observer of Raleigh about Public Safety Secretary Kieran Shanahan's representation of law clients after joining state government and his wife's lobbying work.
Lobbying activities in the state are regulated by Marshall, a Democrat. McCrory and Shanahan are Republicans.
