Governor Perdue Signed 38 Bills Into Law Friday

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Gov. Beverly Perdue has signed into law two-thirds of the bills left behind on her desk by North Carolina legislators when they left town.

Perdue's office said Friday she has signed an additional 38 bills, several of which are associated with changes to public safety laws.

Those bills increase penalties for certain second-degree murders and deaths involving vehicles and create a new penalty for someone that buys and sells children. The bills also have tougher penalties for repeat larceny offenders and prevent people with a history of child neglect from working as child care providers.

Perdue also signed a bill ensuring that North Carolina complies with a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that found unconstitutional mandatory sentences of life in prison without parole for minors for murder convictions.
