A campaign to allow gays and lesbians to marry is continuing in North Carolina, where couples will continue to try to get marriage licenses next week.
The WE DO protest of the Campaign for Southern Equality says couples will apply for marriage licenses Monday in Asheboro and Tuesday in Charlotte. This part of the protest began Wednesday and will cover eight towns.
On Friday, nearly 20 couples unsuccessfully applied for marriage licenses at the Buncombe County Register of Deeds Office in Asheville. The Asheville Citizen-Times reported that eight protesters were arrested on charges of second-degree trespassing and released.
North Carolina has laws that ban gays and lesbians from marrying. The state also approved Tuesday a constitutional amendment that defines marriage solely as a union between a man and a woman.
