RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Republicans secured majorities in both chambers of the North Carolina Legislature for the first time in 140 years after the 2010 elections. The party is poised to preserve it come Election Day, thanks in part to redistricting.
Republicans got to redraw House and Senate districts based on Census figures and created lines that largely favor them.
Campaign workers, legislators and political experts say the maps and current political climate make it a long shot for Democrats to take back control of either chamber.
Republicans control 68 of the 120 House seats and 31 of the 50 Senate seats.
Democrats say Republicans have damaged public education and didn't improve the economy the past two years. Republicans counter they put the state's fiscal house in order and reduced taxes.
