In response to Paul Ryan’s visit to ECU’s campus Monday some local Democrats decided to hold their own rally, which turned out to look more like a protest.
Democrats expected to have the spotlight in North Carolina since the Democratic National Convention is being held in Charlotte. Since Paul Ryan’s visit created quite a buzz in Greenville, local Democrats wanted to make sure they also got their message across.
Some ECU students held up signs at the rally like “Romney-Ryan, Wrong For America, Wrong For North Carolina.”
Congressman G.K. Butterfield and former Congressman Bob Etheridge spoke at the rally.
They talked about why the Romney-Ryan plan is wrong for North Carolina students.
Congressman G.K. Butterfield said, “This race is about an opportunity for North Carolinians – and especially students and young North Carolinians – to see the very clear differences between President Obama and Governor Romney. President Obama believes that every North Carolina student deserves access to a quality, affordable education, and that is why he has invested in education at all levels – from early childhood education program to Pell Grants to protecting student loan rates. Unfortunately for our students, Governor Romney and Congressman Ryan just don’t seem to understand the challenges that you’re facing.”
