The head of North Carolina's troubled health department is apologizing for sending Medicaid cards for nearly 49,000 children to the wrong recipients, but says her agency is dealing with unprecedented changes as a result of the federal healthcare overhaul.
Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Aldona Wos (vahsh) told legislators Tuesday that her staff has been in crisis mode to address the Medicaid card mistake and ongoing issues with a pair of problematic computer systems.
Wos says she is focused on moving forward, not the past. But she also says many of her agency's woes are a result of decisions made by past administrations and the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
Democrats are pushing for Gov. Pat McCrory to replace Wos. The Republican governor is standing by her.
