Craven Co. Republican Chairman Shocked With NC NAACP Pres. Remarks

The President of the NC NAACP was in Kinston Thursday to urge people to vote, but one Republican party leader told WITN he was shocked to hear the comments from Reverend William Barber.

Rev. Barber told the crowd, "We should focus on the heart of America and the heart of North Carolina, what's at the heart of our political process, what should we be focusing on."

The Rev. Barber told voters to focus on economic sustainability, educational equality, healthcare for all, disparity in the criminal justice system, and protecting and expanding voting rights,

But it was the following quote from Rev. Barber that drew a reaction from Chuck Tyson, the chairman of the Craven County Republican party. Rev. Barber said, "We are non-partisan. We don't tell you who to vote for, but we sure do tell you the kinds of things you should be concerned about when you vote." Tyson responded saying, "Well if the NAACP is non-partisan then I am an astronaut getting ready to leave to go to Mars."

Rev. Barber wrapped up the rally saying the right to vote was bled for and died for and the NAACP will keep fighting for voter rights. "All that happened that was God fixed this so that the hands that once picked cotton can now pick presidents."

Tyson responded to that comment saying, "It's a rather ridiculous comment. I find it degrading to the black race that the president of the NAACP would say something like that."
