Congressman Butterfield Beats Challenger

U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield has defeated Democratic primary challenger Daniel Whittacre for his U.S. House seat in northeastern North Carolina.

Unofficial results on Tuesday show Butterfield will represent Democrats in the race for the 1st District. He is seeking his fifth two-year term.

Butterfield is a former state Supreme Court justice from Wilson who succeeded fellow Democrat Frank Ballance in 2004. He serves on the Energy and Commerce Committee and was an adviser to Barack Obama during the 2008 presidential race.

Whittacre is a teacher at Northern Vance High School in Henderson and a retired Air Force officer.

Butterfield will face Republican Pete DiLauro and Libertarian Darryl Holloman in the November election.
