Congressman Walter Jones Not Giving Up Salary During Shutdown

As the government shutdown continues for the second week, one Congressman here in the east says unlike some of his fellow lawmakers in Washington D.C., he’s not giving up his salary until the shutdown ends.

Protect Your Care N.C. and Progress N.C. Action, two advocacy groups, one of which is focused on the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, say they are targeting Republican Congressman Walter Jones, hoping to send him a message through a petition. Thursday they arrived at Jones’ District Office here in Greenville, with 15,000 signatures, and a cardboard cutout of him, sporting the hashtags “#NoPayForJones” and “#GOPshutdown.”

They say out of all of the state’s Congressmen who voted for the government shutdown, Jones is the only one who still hasn’t elected to give up his pay. Candice Davies with Protect Your Care N.C. says if citizens affected by the shutdown are suffering, then Congressman Jones should as well.

We reached out to Congressman Jones’ office in D.C. they say he received his last paycheck before the shutdown began, and wouldn’t receive his next one until the end of October. So for now, he’s waiting to see if the shutdown is resolved before that point.
