Carolina Beach Considers Smoking Ban

CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. (AP) -- A second southeastern North Carolina town is considering becoming the first North Carolina beach to ban smoking.

The StarNews of Wilmington reports the Carolina Beach Town Council unanimously voted Tuesday night for city staff to draft a smoking ban.

The town stretches a little less than four miles along the coast, and the ban would only apply to certain sandy sections. The council says a public hearing and a vote on the ban are scheduled for August.

Carolina Beach could beat out neighbor Wrightsville Beach to be the first town with a smoking ban at the ocean. Wrightsville Beach voters have yet to cast ballots on a resident-led petition to ban smoking on the beach.
