Cain Says He Should Have Spoken Up For Gay Soldier

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain says that he should not have stayed silent after the audience at a recent GOP debate booed a gay soldier.

The Georgia businessman told ABC's "This Week" on Sunday that it would have been "appropriate" for him to have defended the soldier. None of the candidates at the Sept. 22 forum responded to the booing.

Cain's remarks came after President Barack Obama on Saturday chastised the GOP candidates at the debate, saying the nation's commander in chief should stand up for Americans in uniform.

The soldier was booed when he asked via a recorded video if any of the candidates would try to circumvent what he called progress for gays and lesbians in uniform.

How could the audience at the debate have been booing the repeal of DADT and not the gay soldier who asked the question? Do you think booing the repeal was any different from booing the person it affected? Get real!

Reponse to What - Sure it can, most of the President decisions are not related to his position as Commander in Chief but to domestic and foreign issues. I am a Republican through and through but having served for many years, you can tell when the boss is sincere. I believe he is on this issue.

Strange, the other candidates claim they didn't hear the boooo's. Were they deaf?
  • by country boy Location: havelock on Oct 3, 2011 at 10:49 AM
Very seldon do I agree with the President but I do on this one. I know there are some real problems with the ROE but overall, President Obama has been a good Commader in Chief. I also believe the boos were to the soldier, and yes every "wanna be" on the platform should have had the fortitude to say something to the jerk(s) who booed. Strike one.

You say, "very seldon do I agree with the President" and in the next sentence you say "President Obama has been a good Commander in Chief". Well, which is it? It can't be both.

Yes, it can be both! Commander in Chief is only one part of the job of President! One can agree on his handling of foreign policy and disagree on economic policy. That is, of course, unless you are the TP-then you even have to find a way to discredit Obama's success in the war on terror!

Gosh, you guys are desperate! When you pull the TP into this without any tid bit of info...we get it. Obama is the worst president in the history since Jimmy Carter. Even Clinton had a moderate side. I hope you are employed...NC is 10% plus and you are proud of that post? Obama is a horrible leader and president. Now go to the right side of the WITN add and vote...no more Oblamabushspendafortuneofyourkidsfuture. You really didn't vote for this guy did you?

The Boo was directed at the question, not the soldier. And you must be blind to think that he makes a good military official; he is a total joke!

Well you just disagreed with 70% of the military-they reported that they have no problem with gays fighting along side! You don't even know this soldier, but you are calling him a joke-then you want us to believe you and others like you didn't boo him? The UK, Austrailia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Japan, and many others allow gays in the military. Where is your proof that it has harmed their forces?

The military LEADER (Obama) is a joke. 70% is a wildly misguided number. I know from first hand experience that soldiers are told what to say, think, and do. So any poll of a active duty is totally null and void.

Democrats are scum and represent an internal threat to this nation. They are some of the dumbest people on the faith of the earth. Who cares about the gay soldier? I know Democrats don't they just pretend to care, the same ruse they have used on black folks for years.

It baffles me how people are so blind to bigotry. Nobody spoke up because they feared it wouldn't be popular and may cost them some votes. This is sad. Our country is moving backwards. Bigotry should not be tolerated. Any candidate that supports bigotry of any kind will not get my vote.

So we are bigots for our opinions, yet you are a champion of civil rights for yours? Stop using the word bigot, because it DOES NOT APPLY HERE. The vast majority of people don't recognize homosexuality as a normal or functional behavior. If you disagree, then please by all means voice your opinion. But STOP calling us BIGOTS.

So, let me get this right. It is ok for a union thug to say he wants to "take out" the tea party and the president speaks directly after him without denouncing the statement, it is ok for a congresswomen to say "they can all go to hell" and it is ok to talk about hanging them in trees but when a spectator (probably put in place by the democrats) boos a question asked by a soldier it is all the republican parties fault? You democrats are simply amazing, your president destroys our great country and all you can do is attack on minor issues, because you have NO RECORD for to debate on. I can't wait until 2012 when the intelligent voters, largest majority I might add, put someone in office that cares about this country and what it stands for!!

Ummmmmmmm In case you had not noticed, I have the utmost respect for the service that these men and women have provided to our country, I have served myself, however, I and 99.89% of current and past service members do not expect to be treated any differently than those who did not serve. Putting us on a pedestal is not what we want. Appreciation for our service and maybe a thank you is all most of us expect, we are simply american citizens just like you. Your comment shows plain and simple ignorance!! The largest majority of soldiers don't want to know if the person showering next to us or sleeping next to us is gay or lesbian, we would rather not know!!!! Addressing the heckler in the crowd would have done nothing more than in some way validate his "booo" and that is exactly what Odumbo and Cain have done with continuing to bring it to the forefront!! Again, I can't wait until 2012 when the real american thinkers get this idiot out of office!!

I will give the gay service man and women the respect they deserve for serving our country but not for being gay. I am not a hypocrite, doubt you even know what the word means. By the way, when you quote someone it is supposed to be word for word and an end quote is required, basic elementary school grammar, try it some time.

If you have been reading the news in the last year you will see there is a "whole" group of gay republicans "doing their own things". Ann Coulter spoke at one of their events. Apparently she wasn't getting enough strength to carry on by aligning herself with them ,so she has decided to do an about face. She's a bit odd when it comes to real values and doesn't know quite where to take a stand, unless it's where it's raining money at the time. Sounds like a typical-good republican to me.
