In the U.S house of representatives G.K. Butterfield joined Walter Jones as incumbent congressmen that have filed for re-election. Butterfield has served Distrcit 1 since 2004.

The democrat is seeking his 5th term in the heavily democratic district that spans parts of 23 counties including Greenville, New Bern, Wilson, Washington and Elizabeth City.

PREVIOUS STORY:
First District Democrat Congressman G.K. Butterfield was in Greenville Monday to kick off his reelection bid.

The congressman weighed in on the president's budget proposal at the same time, saying, "We must never again have millionaires and billionaires who pay very little in federal income tax. The budget calls for a minimum tax of thirty-percent on the wealthy. I think it's a fair approach, it's a balanced approach. We've got to get deficit spending under control, but we cannot balance the budget on the backs of poor people and middle class families."

President Obama's budget talks about shared sacrifice, raising taxes on the wealthy and investing money to create new jobs. It also includes nearly two-trillion dollars in tax increases. The 3.8 trillion dollar spending blueprint also proposes hundreds of billions of dollars in new spending and calls for broad cuts in government and military spending.

Congressional Republicans say the president is offering nothing new - and ignoring a spending crisis threatening to crush the economy.
