North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr has blogged about his recent visit to the Guantanamo Bay prison camp, recommending the United States focus on where to place detainees if the facility closes.
Burr praised the Cuban base's staff in a Monday evening blog post. He defended the guard force, and added how they had endured verbal and physical attacks from detainees.
Stating he was "immensely impressed" with the base, Burr said the U.S. must think "long and hard" about where to place detainees instead of focusing on closing the facility.
The visit was in response to President Barack Obama's executive order to close the facility within one year. Burr has expressed that he is not convinced it is in the country's best national security interest to move the prisoners to the U.S.
