Rep. G.K. Butterfield has defeated Republican challenger Dean Stephens in North Carolina's 1st Congressional District.
The Associated Press called the race for Butterfield based on an analysis of voter interviews, conducted for the AP by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International.
Butterfield was elected to Congress in a special election in 2004, and ran unopposed for re-election in 2006. The Democrat from Wilson is one of the nine chief deputy whips on the Democratic side of the House.
Stephens spent more than 20 years working in corporations as a systems manager before returning to his native North Carolina.
The 1st District covers much of northeast North Carolina along the intracoastal waterway, and includes Roanoke Rapids and Goldsboro.
