Police in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania say they had to waste a lot of time investigating a story that they suspected was false from the start.
They now say the McCain campaign volunteer who told them she'd been robbed and pinned to the ground by a black man who scratched the letter "B" on her face because she was a McCain supporter made the whole thing up.
They say Ashley Todd admitted it today. She's being charged with making a false report to police. Police say they're concerned about her mental health, so they're consulting with prosecutors. And Todd remains in custody.
One reason police suspected all along that she might not be telling the truth is that the "B" that was scratched onto her cheek was backward.
A police official says, "We had some serious cases going on, and this wasted so much time."
