Campaign officials for Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole say she's ready to compete without the financial backing of national party leaders.
National Republican Senatorial Committee chairman Sen. John Ensign had called on Republicans last month to provide the funds necessary to remain competitive. But he issued a sobering statement saying he had no choice but to decrease the budget available for state races.
That could pose a problem for Dole in North Carolina. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has blocked off large chunks of media time across the state, and the group has already gone to the airwaves with two ads decrying Dole's effectiveness.
Dole spokesman Dan McLagan said the campaign has always worked under the assumption that Dole would be operating alone.
