Will Obama Visit Iraq?

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Barack Obama is considering a visit to Iraq this summer, his first to the war zone since becoming a presidential candidate.

Obama revealed his plans to The New York Times. He has been under criticism from Republican rival John McCain for failing to visit Iraq since 2006. Obama also declined McCain's invitation for a joint trip.

"I just don't want to be involved in a political stunt," Obama said, according to a report on the newspaper's Web site Wednesday.

"I think that if I'm going to Iraq, then I'm there to talk to troops and talk to commanders," he said in the interview. "I'm not there to try to score political points or perform. The work they're doing there is too important."

Obama's campaign has been considering an overseas trip since last year to beef up his foreign policy credentials, but the extended fight for the Democratic nomination with Hillary Rodham Clinton has delayed those plans.

"A trip is under consideration but no final plans have been made," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said Wednesday.

Obama took his only trip to Iraq in January 2006, when he traveled as part of a congressional delegation. McCain has been criticizing him for not returning, and the Republican Party joined the attack Wednesday by launching an online clock to count the days since Obama last visited.

"This is about leadership and learning," McCain said in Nevada, where he was campaigning. "To say that we're failing in Iraq and not succeeding does not comport with the facts on the ground, so we've got to show him the facts on the ground."

In my world individuals that attend & stay with a church do so because they believe in what the church & its leader represent & stand for. If the individual disagrees with views such as who invented aids and for what reason, cursing our nation, etc..., they IMMEDIATELY look for another church. It is in my opinion, and probably many others, that an individual who attends a church for 20 years, until it interferes w/ personal or political gains, that preaches antiwhite & antiAmerican sermons, does not derserve to be a representative of America, or even an American citizen at that. It is also my opinion that any member of the white race(or any other race) that supports such an individual is a traitor to America, the white race, and all the TRUE American citizens that fought & died for our country and what it represents. An individual such as this cannot be trusted and should therefore not be allowed to meet with our enemies as an official representative of The United States of America.

I served under both Dem and Rep administrations. Our people in uniform suffer under Dem admin and fair OK under Rep admin. Obama is going to Iraq to do damage control to his image and try to make himself look not so soft on terrorism. Nice try but I hope the public can see through it. I don't mean him harm but he needs to go on patrol in Sadr city.

He will visit Iraq to see how much money he can take away from the military. He will earmark the dollars for various social programs here that are extensions of the already mismanaged social programs. Jimmy Carter did it,Slick Willy did it, so why not. Obama could care less about the men and women in uniform, and the members of the armed forces know it. Pompous Ivy League graduates, and lawyers, are two groups of people the military is wary of. Obama needs to smell a little diesel fuel and dirt, and get down where the rubber meets the road.
