Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue is a step closer to a promotion, and Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory will be her challenger.
Perdue had 55 percent of the vote with a little over half of the
precincts reporting to win the Democratic govenor's race. She beat
State Treasurer Richard Moore, who had 41 percent. Retired Air
Force Col. Dennis Nielsen of Nash County was third with 4 percent.
A few moments later, state Sen. Fred Smith conceded the GOP race
for governor to McCrory, who collected 47 percent of the vote.
Smith issued the concession shortly before 10 p.m.
