The North Carolina primary election next Tuesday also includes legislative candidates, although voters have heard more from candidates for president and governor.
The GOP is mostly focused on getting along during this primary
campaign season. Past primaries have featured a multimillion-dollar
battle between moderate and conservative forces within the party,
and Republicans paid the price in the general election.
In 2003, Democrats held 88 of the Legislature's 170 seats. Now
they hold 99, the most in a decade.
Voter registration is surging in light of North Carolina's newly
found prominence in the Democratic presidential primary, three
contests could be a wild card for white incumbent legislators in
majority black districts.
