Chelsea Clinton has repeatedly refused to discuss her father's affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky -- until today.
She suggested while campaigning at Duke University today that she doesn't believe voters should consider how her mother responded to Bill Clinton's affair when making judgments about her character.
Clinton was responding to a question from a student who said the issue was important for voters who wanted to assess the character of candidates in the race. Saying she agreed that character was important, Clinton also said that when she thinks about character for a public official, she thinks about how people respond to both successes and failures in their public lives. She said she defined her mother's character by issues such as health care.
Duke freshman Cliff Satell said afterward he thought Clinton dodged his question. He said Hillary Clinton's handling of the scandal offered voters a look into her character.
