John Edwards' Lawyer Defends Campaign Spending $800,000+ In 2011

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- A lawyer for John Edwards is defending his campaign's 2011 spending, saying the expenses were related to last year's criminal probe of the former presidential candidate and a federal audit.

Patricia A. Fiori said none of the $836,712 in expenses disclosed last week went to Edwards or his criminal defense team.

The Associated Press reported Wednesday that the Federal Election Commission says the former North Carolina senator owes taxpayers more than $2.1 million in public matching funds improperly received after he dropped his 2008 run for the White House.

That FEC audit is separate from the criminal case in which Edwards faces six counts related to campaign finance violations over money paid by wealthy donors to hide his pregnant mistress during the 2008 race. Edwards has pleaded not guilty.

I am still praying for him that god will bring john out of this mess that he is in . I know by means that he is innocent and will remain innocent for ever. I know that he will be o.k. for the rest of his life and that he has donenothing wrong.

so? the rest of us don't have CAMPAIGN funds (paid for by the people) to pay legal expenses. PAY FOR IT YOURSELF. You are no one special; do it yourself or get a court appointed lawyer. His lawyer is SUCKING UP THAT MONEY LIKE A VACUUM CLEANER; get it while it's still there.

Why are those legitimate expenses to spend tax-payer money on, anyway? Seems to me that legal defense should be coming out of his own pocket. And if it was ruled he owed the tax-payers money and there was some in the account, why was it not seized at that time? Executing a judgment only takes a couple of weeks. I have a compromise that would work. He can work at the convenience of the state out on the road with the other inmates until it's paid back.

If he is not running for anything why would he need to spend campaign money?

Now that the probe is over, why can't he return the money. Besides the money was to be used to get elected not to keep him out of jail.

Not trying to take up for the man. I really never liked his comments but; Hasn't this man been through enough? And whatever happened to a quick and speedy trial?

Everything this man has gone through he brought on himself. He doesn't want a quick and speedy trial because he knows he will then go to prison. This is why he keeps postponing it with lies about medical conditions and such.

there are others in prison with worse health conditions than his that don't get out just because they are sick; do the crime..do the time. I feel sorry for him also, but....I feel sorry for all those in jails everywhere.

Short answer NO, he hasn't even come close to being through enough!! Quick and speedy trial didn't happen because he and his lawyers asked for one delay after another.

He asked for the last delay, so I guess he does not want a quick trial.

He was a slimeballl of a US Senator representing NC when some one needed something he wasn't there. He was campaigning for US President. Getting HIS priorities straight versus the people. Known as a crook, add pickpocket of the taxpapers!
