Candidates in a North Carolina congressional race have been using selective editing and selective facts to air ads that are leading voters astray.
An ad by Republican candidate Ilario Pantano trims two news clips to exclude key biographical tidbits: That he was once charged with murder and that he once worked for Wall Street firm Goldman Sachs.
An ad by Democratic Rep. Mike McIntyre accuses Pantano of wanting to raise taxes 23 percent. It misrepresents a proposal that Pantano supports to rely on a large sales tax but eliminate a range of other taxes, such as the income tax.
The ads have aired on television this month in the district covering southeastern North Carolina. McIntyre is seeking re-election after more than a decade in office.
