Washington State Lawmakers Pass Gay Marriage Bill

The Washington state Legislature has voted to legalize gay marriage, setting the stage for the state to become the seventh in the nation to allow same-sex couples to wed.

The action comes a day after a federal appeals court declared California's ban on gay marriage unconstitutional.

The Washington state House passed the measure on a 55-43 vote Wednesday. The state Senate approved the proposal last week.

Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire is expected to sign the bill next week, and it would take effect 90 days later. But opponents have promised a challenge, which could put the law on hold pending the result of a November vote.

Same-sex marriage is legal in New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Washington D.C.

Since the Catholics created the sanctity of Marriage as we know it, how about checking with them to see if this is going to be OK?

snake oil the scholar strikes again! I'm sure that you are aware that there were a number of Eastern Rite churches in existence prior to the Roman Catholic Church's coalescence (the Ethiopian and Armenian Orthodox Churches to name a couple) that had views on marriage. That said, if I'm not a Roman Catholic, why should I give two bits about whether or not they are OK with it?

So you gettin lazy in your old age? The Roman Catholic tradition of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries defined marriage as a sacrament ordained by God,[37] signifying the mystical marriage of Christ to his Church.[80] "The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament."[81] The mutual love between man and wife becomes an image of the eternal love with which God loves humankind. The celebration of marriage between two Catholics normally takes place during the public liturgical celebration of the Holy Mass, because of its sacramental connection with the unity of the Paschal mystery of Christ (Communion). Sacramental marriage confers a perpetual and exclusive bond between the spouses. By its nature, the institution of marriage and conjugal love is ordered to the procreation and upbringing of offspring. Marriage creates rights and duties in the Church between the spouses and towards their children: "[e]ntering marriage with the intention of never having children is a grave wrong and more than likely grounds for an annulment."[82] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marriage#Roman_Catholicism

So what if it's factual - he asked you why he, as a non-catholic, should care what the catholic church says on the matter; you didn't answer that. He claimed there are older churches that existed prior to the Roman catholic church, namely the Armenian Apostolic Church (est. 305 AD) with the view that marriage was a holy thing - your wikipedia article does nothing to refute his point, only strengthen it. But, what else should I expect?

To be fair to wikipedia, as long as the article references it's sources it's pretty genuine and I wouldn't doubt it credibility. However, OSOC still failed to answer the question, or ignored it. Either way he's (as usual) wrong.

How about I make it so simple a caveman can do it? Why do you want american government to enforce or create laws following your thoughts on Leviticus 18:22 (homosexuality) but you don't seem to care about Leviticus 11:10 (eating shellfish) or Leviticus 11:7 (eating pork)?? All of these rules are from the same book of the old testament.

"For everyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother. His blood shall be upon him." (Leviticus 20:9) "If a man lies with a woman during her sickness and uncovers her nakedness, he has discovered her flow, and she has uncovered the flow of her blood. Both of them shall be cut off from her people." (Leviticus 20:18) "Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property." (Leviticus 25:44-45) "Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard." (Leviticus 19:27) "...and the swine, though it divides the hoof, having cloven hooves, yet does not chew the cud, is unclean to you." (Leviticus 11:7) "...do not plant your field with two kinds of seed. Do not wear material woven of two kinds of material." (Leviticus 19:19) "But all in the seas or in the rivers that do not have fins and scales, all that move in the water or any living thing which is in the water, they are an abomination to you." (Leviticus 11:10) "They (shellfish) shall be an abomination to you; you shall not eat their flesh, but you shall regard their carcasses as an abomination." (Leviticus 11:11) "And these you shall regard as an abomination among the birds; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, the vulture, the buzzard." (Leviticus 11:13) "Whatever crawls on its belly, whatever goes on all fours, or whatever has many feet among all creeping things that creep on the earth, these you shall not eat, for they are an abomination." There you go OSOC. A list of things Leviticus calls abominations or says are A-okay. I fully expect you to start supporting the complete ban of all these or reinstating the things it advocates for; like slavery for example.

Religious institutions can teach whatever the heck they want as long as it doesn't violate the law. There are many that teach against pre marital sex, but lots of that happens. Also, this "attack" on the Catholic Church is nonsense. The same law already exists in more than one half of the states. Lastly, I'm so sorry, but there is NO research showing that children are any more successful in a home with a mother and father or two fathers or two mothers. You, Dave, are defending yourself with nonsense.

You'll find out first hand if you've ever had sex with a woman on her menstrual cycle, or been disrespectul to your parents, or cut your hair a certain way, or eaten any manner of shellfish, or done any number of things the Bible says are an abomination. So all I can say is, Hell may be real, and if it is I may go there for not believing in an unjust God, but you'll go there for being a horrible "Christian." At least I'm not trying to pretend to be something that I'm not like you do.

This has nothing to do with homosexual freedom and everything to do with attacks on First Amendment religious Freedom. We have seen just over the past week that religious institution will not be able to teach that homosexuality is a sin because of these "marriage" laws. This is just like the obama administrations attack on the Catholic church. Marriage not only has religious significance as "one man, one woman" but also historical significance and social significance. Children are much more successful in a home with a strong father and mother. No researcher even tries to deny that.

I challenge you to provide evidence or research that validates your claim that hetero families produce more successful children than homosexual ones. Here's two studies that say you're wrong: http://www.psychology.org.au/Assets/Files/LGBT-Families-Lit-Review.pdf & http://www.cpa.ca/cpasite/userfiles/Documents/Marriage%20of%20Same-Sex%20Couples%20Position%20Statement%20-%20October%202006%20(1).pdf Your turn.

Perhaps you should read things before you reply. 'true dave' never said anything about children of single parents not being nice, caring, or respectful (although you have really blown that out of the water with your sincere appraisal of someone you don't know as "stupid"). He was merely saying that, according to the data, children with two parents are usually more successful in life than those with a single parent. This is not a gauge of how nice a person is, but rather how much they achieve: financially, educationally, healthiness, and being a law-abiding citizen, etc.

Apparently you're not one of the nicest, caring and respectful people that others seem to believe you are. And if you think it's wrong, than your mother failed at raising you. So yeah, wrong all around. Good day and all.

Maybe we should do like Minnesota and make discussion of homosexuality illegal so that gay students get bullied until they commit suicide? I'm sure it'd make you happy to have the blood of children on your hands. Here read this link and be educated. Being narrow minded is only going to hurt you in the long run. http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1569797,00.html
