Unemployment Aid Applications Drop To 7-Month Low

The number of people applying for unemployment benefits fell last week to the lowest level since early April, a sign that layoffs are easing and hiring may pick up.

The Labor Department says weekly applications dropped by 5,000 to a seasonally adjusted 388,000. It was the fourth decline in five weeks.

The four-week average, a less volatile measure, dropped to 396,750. That's the first time the average been below 400,000 in seven months.

Applications need to consistently drop below 375,000 to signal sustained job gains. They haven't been that low since February.

The total number of people receiving benefits also fell to the lowest level since Sept. 2008, when Lehman Brothers collapsed and the financial crisis intensified.

Tea Party Nation sent to their members a message from activist Melissa Brookstone urging businesspeople to “not hire a single person” to protest the Obama administration’s supposed “war against business and my country.” Brookstone writes that business owners should stop hiring new employees in order to stand up to “this new dictator,” the “global Progressive socialist movement,” Hollywood, the media and Occupy Wall Street." http://www.care2.com/causes/tea-party-group-urges-small-businesses-not-to-hire-a-single-person-to-hurt-obama.html

Whatever you do, please don't let the GOP find out this good news because they will ratchet up their ways to obstruct hiring. They are out to destroy this country at any and all cost. So please I beg you folks to not let the Republicans find out this good piece of news.

If the GOP gets the white house they will probably make me find a job. That would kill me.

This article is misleading because it doesn't mention the folks whose benefits have run out and can't apply again. This would also account for the reduction in number of people receiving benefits.

Fred, I agree with you. The article is misleading because it is only recording new applications for benefits and drawing the conclusion that lay-offs must be subsiding. I think the issue is seasonal hiring has picked up for xmas, which would wash these numbers out by February.

Keep hope alive, as long as it polls that Obama will not be back, at least there is a chance people will start to hire. Until Obamacare is repealed, EPA is defunded somewhat and republicans reflect undoing damages, we will still have higher than normal unemployment...

If you are so concerned about unemployment numbers, why don't you write your Republican majority leader and tell him to pass the Jobs Bill.... Just like I thought.... another Hypocrite.

that doesn't always mean people are getting hired, it means that people can no longer receive unemployment benefits. they are maxed out. the rate is still at 9% dont try and liberlize this thing to make it sound like people are getting hired. they have run out on the benefits to sign up!!

Nope, cause if it was obama would be all over the keystone pipeline. This would create over 20,000 shovel ready jobs and help lower our demand on foreign oil. obama's attitude it to ignore it.

He's not ignoring it or canceling it, he wants other options for re-routing it around a region that may pose a potential environmental rise to drinking water. The proposal to run the pipeline over Nebraska’s Ogallala aquifer, a major source of fresh water for millions in the Midwest. Environmentalists are also critical of the energy-intensive process used for extracting tar-sands oil.

Wrong again. obama wants gas to hit $5.00 a gallon so his "Buddies" in the green industries can get their greedy hands on tax payer money. Here are the "shovel ready" jobs, where is obama??
