Thousands Attend Rally For Slain Florida Teen

Thousands of Sanford residents and protesters from around the country attended a rally for a black teen fatally shot by a neighborhood watch captain in Florida.

The rally was initially planned for a 400-seat church. But Thursday evening's two-hour rally for 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was moved to Fort Mellon Park in downtown Sanford to make room for all the people expected to attend.

Civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton told the crowd that he wants to see Martin's shooter, George Zimmerman, in court with handcuffs behind his back.

Zimmerman has claimed self-defense and has not been arrested. The case is being reviewed by the State Attorney's Office.

I keep my gun strapped on me at all times, even when I go inside the Mall, Walmart or anywhere. I wish you would run up on me.

Poor child lost his life because of his own actions. Should happen more often. Protect yourself people. It's one of the only rights we have left. Or do we?

It's so sad that all of these ignorant people up here are so hung up on the fact that the NAACP is involved and that there are rallies going on. Bringing up all of these unrelated attacks and the victims the point is this kid was murdered and so far the murderer is walking free, without any guilt or sorrow while this boys family grieves for there son. All the other attackers mentioned in these comments are dealing with the justice system for their crimes and so should zimmerman. If this had been published and no names or races were given I bet these racist people wouldn't have the same opinion, and if it were the same situation but the race roles were reversed I'm sure everyone would want the "black man" in prison for life. I am a white woman and I'm tired of the hatred shown by white people towards black people especially black youth. I have seen upbringing of both white and black youth and honestly black women inforce discipline and obedience in there children more than white women. It doesn't matter the race when someone feels like they are grown they are gonna do whatever they want to do.

Exactly, but for the first week, the media made this into a white/black thing.....all the while, zimmerman is a mexican. After the fact, the media is STILL making this a race thing.

The color does not matter. If you look like a thug, people assume your a thug. If someone walks into a KFC late at night with a ski mask on, they are probably a robber. The same is true for people who dress in hoodies, baggy pants and white sneakers. People are going to assume they are a thug. Also, look at who commits the majority of crime in Eastern NC. It is young black males. The ones who do not want to be stereotyped need to dress for success and not the same as the common street thug if they want to ever break this stereotype.

Newt Gingrich said Thursday night he believes the killing of Trayvon Martin is tragic but the investigation is being handled correctly, and that Florida's "stand your ground" law most likely doesn't apply to the case. Let's see if I got this right. This shooter was not arrested as he was protected under the Stand Your Ground law, but according to Newt this law does not apply here and should not be seen as the culprit. I guess you have to really be in love with Newt to understand his logic. Spoken like a true repug.

From what I understand the stand your ground law dosn't apply because the guy was stalking the kid.

Nobody here or at the rallies know any facts but they are all willing to give their opinions and convict someone of murder. This is nothing more than political pandering by the president and race baiters like al sharpton looking for his next paycheck.

The president said on the national news if he had a son he would be just like the young man that was shot. He never said anything like that when Eve Carson was killed. So your president is involved.

I think they want Zimmerman to face a court and jury. Nothing to do with race.

Zimmerman should be happy in the next "gated community" he is about to visit. There will be black people so if he wants to get "tough" he'll have lots of opportunity. Oh! that's right! These guys aren't kids and he won't have his gun. Good luck, tough guy!

Are you kidding me about the rallies? Those people are nothing but racist. Yes, justice needs to be served either to condemn Zimmerman or to clear his name. I know one thing they wouldn't be rallying if the shooter was black and the teenager was white.

The killers of Eve Carson were arrested and going though the judicial process, as they should and get what they deserve...Trayvon's killer is still free, Big Difference. Apples and oranges, CLOWN.

Well, if the shooter was black and the teenager was white...the shooter would be in jail. No reason to rally if the bad guy is in custody.

I AM A WHITE WOMAN AND EVEN I KNOW THAT HAD THAT BEEN A BLACK MAN SHOOTING A WHITE KID THAT BLACK MAN WOULD HAVE BEEN BOOKED AND IN JAIL BEFORE THE INK FROM HIS PRINTS WAS DRY

This is a story that has touched the entire nation...If the situation had of been the other way around...the decision to arrest Trayvon would have been acted upon quickly without a bond...it's a sad situation and I hope this unnecessary investigation doesn't linger...all the investigator's have to do is listen to the 911 tape...my blessings goes out to this young man's family in hopes they will soon have their son's justice and closure to move forward
