Staples To Close Hundreds of Stores Nationwide

One of the nation's largest office supply retailers plans to close dozens of stores.

Staples has announced that it will close 225 stores in North America by the end of 2014.

With nearly half of all sales generated online, and increased overhead costs, the big box store is seeking to aggressively cut costs.

Staples has 2,200 locations worldwide with 1,500 in the United States.

It is still unclear how many jobs may be lost or exactly which locations will be closed.

Experts say the recession has caused added stress to the industry, which is now under pressure from discount stores and online retailers.

Rival stores Office Depot and Office Max recently completed a billion dollar merger.
