Researchers say cases of bladder cancer linked to smoking are much higher than previously thought.
The new study from the National Cancer Institute found former smokers were two times more likely to develop bladder cancer than people who never smoked, and current smokers were four times more likely.
Researchers also found the risk for the disease among women who smoke is similar to that of men, where smoking is the suspected cause of half of all cases.
According to the American Cancer Society, over 1,800 new cases of bladder cancer were reported North Carolina in 2010.
