RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr has visited Afghanistan as part of his role on the Senate Intelligence Committee.
A Burr spokesman said that the senator returned Tuesday morning after leaving Washington last Friday. He visited Afghanistan with fellow Republican and committee vice chairman Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia.
Burr's office said he met with senior Afghan and U.S. officials to learn about the region's security issues and others to learn firsthand what's happening on the ground. U.S. military forces still total about 100,000 in the country.
Burr visited Afghanistan and Pakistan earlier this year. North Carolina's other senator, Democrat Kay Hagan, has visited Afghanistan at least twice. She's a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
