A new report says the U.S. abortion rate has declined to its lowest level since 1973, and the number of abortions fell by 13 percent between 2008 and 2011.
Those are the key findings in the latest national survey of abortion providers conducted by the Guttmacher Institute, a prominent research organization which supports legal access to abortion.
Guttmacher's figures are of interest on both sides of the abortion debate because they are more up-to-date and in some ways more comprehensive than abortion statistics compiled by the federal government.
According to the report, there were about 1 million, 60-thousand abortions in the U.S. in 2011, down from 1.2 million in 2008. New York and Maryland had the highest abortion rates; Wyoming and Mississippi had the lowest.
