People Close To Case: Gulf Oil Spill Trial Delayed

A federal trial over the nation's worst offshore oil disaster has been delayed for a week to allow more time for settlement talks, according to two people close to the case.

The two people told The Associated Press the decision was made Sunday during a conference call between parties in the case and U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier. They spoke on condition of anonymity because a formal ruling had not yet been issued.

Among other things, the trial that had been set to begin Monday is meant to determine the penalties that need to be paid by BP and other companies involved in the oil spill. Billions of dollars are at stake.

ten million to each family; 10 billion to each state involved; reduced oil prices for 100 years to America; the CEO to jail for 20 years; and 100 billion to the US government.

Here's the first (and probably the biggest) jaw-dropping moment of the hearing with BP CEO Tony Hayward: GOP Rep. Joe Barton, the top Republican on the House Energy Committee’s subcommittee for investigations, apologized to BP CEO Tony Hayward, saying he’s "ashamed" of the American response to BP’s oil spill. According to Barton, asking BP to set up an escrow account to compensate victims of BP's disaster was a criminal action -- a "shakedown" as he put it by the Obama Administration.

BP will be charged a fine smaller than the record profits BP made that year. 11 people are dead, and the ocean is more toxic than ever. People are eating contaminated fish that will decrease their lifespan depending on how often they eat it. BP will continue to make record profits while it pollutes the only planet that is inhabitable, for now...Next...THE MOON!

Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) unbelievably apologized to BP's Tony Hayward, saying that he is "ashamed" how America has treated BP. If a Democrat did this, FOX News would be accusing the Dems of traitors with treason against this country and demanding their prosecution.

They should be suing Obama over his inactions to prevent oil hitting the beach while USCG skimmer ships sat in port waiting. Now that was the crime. No one can tell me he didn't have access to see the same satelite pictures of oil we did. He blew it just like he always does it when leadership is needed. Our gas prices will be 4 bucks by summer and most likely, based on analyists be 5 bucks in Dec. I sure this hope and change is working fer ya...I am sure the Saudis appreciate our wealth along with specualtors due to Obamas policy of not knowing what to do....

The tools of ignorance at FAUX News blame the president for the oil spill, not BP. The tools conveniently ignore that it was two Texas oil men, George W. Bush and Dick Cheney (of secret Energy Commission fame) who deregulated Big Oil and stacked the Minerals Management Services with their industry cronies to green-light more off-shore oil drilling in ever deeper water. While demanding that President Obama use his "magical powers" to stop the leak, the tools of ignorance at FAUX News continue to preach deregulation and an unfettered free market for "drill, baby, drill" for Big Oil.

The 2 oil men in the leading last administration let the oil companies write the energy policy. They made the rules for themselves and cut every corner they could just for more profits. Now with the House run by Republicans, I'll bet BP just gets a little slap on the wrist, and a few million$$ here and there, and you're right, all will be forgotten.

You mean when gas prices were $1.61 a gallon? Also, any idiot who thinks the gas buyers, you and me, will not pay BP back for any fine imposed....should not vote, operate machinery.....

Let me guess, some bought and paid for Republican will step in and try to have the case dropped in return for BP being fined four dollars and having to write a lovely apology card to the Gulf. Oh, they have already tried that?

Can you again say how much money BP gave Obama for his 08 campaign or have you forgotten already?
