Senate OKs Short-Term Extension Of Payroll Tax Cut

The Senate has approved a two-month extension of a cut to the Social Security payroll tax and agreed to continue jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed.

It's a partial victory for President Barack Obama's year-end jobs agenda.

It also contains a provision demanded by Republicans to pressure Obama into approving construction of a Canada-to-Texas oil pipeline that promises thousands of jobs.

Democratic and GOP leaders went with just a short extension after failing to agree on big enough spending cuts to pay for a full-year renewal of the payroll tax cut.

The 2 percentage point tax cut affects 160 million taxpayers. The weekly jobless payments average about $300 for millions of people who have been out of work for six months or more.

The measure was approved by an 89-10 vote during a Saturday session.

Those who have posted "more spending" obviously haven't noticed that this cut is "paid for"-which is exactly what all the disagreement has been about! You can't imagine how ignorant you look when you post comments with no facts!

Oh man....koolaid just went off sale at the pig yesterday. I hope you stocked up for your koolaid party. Invite Barlow and lavon! You guys can talk shop about Jimmy Carter and Barrack Obama and what caused their epic failures as president. Seems the GOP is the only party trying to cut "SPENDING". Can you give us just one example of the DNC cutting spending? Just one...I'll wait...

Once more the Repugs have protected their wealthy donors. What does the pipeline have to do with the payroll tax cut? NOthing! In fact, by sticking this provision in the Repugs have almost guaranteed that the pipeline will not be approved. There is no way an environmental impact study on more that a thousand miles of pipe can be done in two months. The Repugs know this and when the project is stopped they'll all shout "Look!, Look! Obama just stopped 20,000 people from getting jobs! and their mindless sheep will chime in.

When will you and your sister i.e. Obabma Snake Oil Co, open your eyes and admit BOTH partys pander to special interests? Remember when the bankers were able to get bonuses even though they lost billions and required a bailout from taxpayers? Well... guess who wrote into the bailout package that allowed this to happen Chris Dodd thats who!! You know the guy in the Frank/Dodd bill! He wanted to ensure he would get a job as a lobbyists after he left the Senate. Clinton & Bush were responsible for having laws/regs stripped away e.g Glass/Steagal, etc. that put taxpayers on the hook for reckless banking activities. Obama did NOTHING to find/prosecute folks involved for the financial disaster!! BOTH partys do the bidding of special interests!! They is NO difference between them, they just pander different ones!! They should represent us, NOT lobbyists/PACs!! Why won't either party push for true/meaningful campaign finance reform? Because it would make them less money, and less powerful. You and OBSOCo are exactly alike, spewing your party's propaganda witout admitting BOTH are for sale!! Until we can have an avg joe run for and win office, NOTHING will change! OPEN your eyes and demand campaign finance reform!! Get rid of lobbyists/PACs!!!!!

I hope the people will again show Congress that we want them to act on our behalf, not their ambitions/their personal endeavors.

Regardless of party, do the people in our government have any idea how much of a nightmare this is going to create? Everyone who handles payroll are probably going to get headaches from this.

SankeOil - You need to brush up on your understanding of what a commodity is. A commodity has full or partial fungibility; that is, the market treats it as equivalent or nearly so no matter who produces it. It doesn't matter if the oil comes from Canada, the US, or your aunt Lucy... the price would be the same. We pay over $3 per gallon for gas because that's what the gas companies charge. If the gas/oil companies thought that we would pay $10/gallon, the price would be $10/gallon overnight. If we drilled in every place in the US that MIGHT have oil, it would still be sold on the WORLD market, not just in the US - and we would still pay whatever the oil companies thought they could charge. Now, if you are proposing that we nationalize the oil industry in America and use the oil we drill from the US only in the US - then I would agree, prices might drop (at least temporarily). I know, I know - ugga booga socialism!

I would rather by my oil from Canada than Iran! Obama is pandering to the environmental extreemist instead of creating jobs.
