Report Says North Korea Fires Missile After Leader's Death

South Korea's Yonhap news agency says North Korea has conducted a short-range missile test on the day the country announced the death of leader Kim Jong Il.

South Korean military officials said Monday they couldn't immediately confirm the report. Yonhap cited unidentified government officials as saying the missile test occurred off the east coast.

North Korea is urging its people to rally behind Kim Jong Il's young son and heir-apparent Kim Jong Un. The world is watching warily for signs of instability in a nation pursuing nuclear weapons.

South Korea has put its military on high alert against the North's 1.2 million-strong armed forces. President Barack Obama agreed by phone with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak to closely monitor developments.

Previous Story:
North Korea is calling Kim Jong Il's son a "great successor" to the country's guiding principle of self reliance, as the country rallies around heir-apparent Kim Jong Un as the next leader.

The North's official Korean Central News Agency says the country "must faithfully revere respectable comrade Kim Jong Un."

North Korea on Monday urged its 24 million people to rally behind Kim Jong Un as it mourns the death of supreme leader Kim Jong Il.

The North's neighbors, meanwhile, are mindful of North Korea's nuclear weapons programs and 1.2 million-strong armed forces. South Korea has put its military on high alert.

Previous story:
Kim Jong Il, North Korea's mercurial and enigmatic leader, has died. He was 69.

Kim's death was announced Monday by the state television from the North Korean capital, Pyongyang.

Kim is believed to have suffered a stroke in 2008 but appeared relatively vigorous in photos and video from recent trips to China and Russia and in numerous trips around the country carefully documented by state media. The leader, reputed to have had a taste for cigars, cognac and gourmet cuisine, was believed to have had diabetes and heart disease.

Their missle technology is much more effective than it used to be. I hear the chinese have started exporting viagra to them to use as rocket fuel.

Kim Jong Il did not die of natural causes. His son could not wait to be dictator so he stuck his father in a rocket and launched him.

Why don't we take care of our own 'back-yard' instead of getting in their business? If they shoot them this way ......... well......... FRY THEM... they have a leader and if the public does not like what is happening..... let them take care of it

I don't think we'll have to worry about that, all of their missiles have shoddy craftsmanship; go about two hundred feet then promptly fall apart. As for the people, they are all brainwashed to do anything their leader says, in fact it’s illegal to get news from anywhere but their government appointed news organization, so that’s zero chance of the populace overthrowing their leadership.

If you want to say Bush "murdered" anyone, you will have an awful long list of those to add to that pile. Remember that congressman and senators voted for the wars. Unlike Obama, Bush followed procedure and got approval before putting our brave men and women in harms way. What an ignorant comment yours is, no surprise there, you probably watch Soros news too and believe it like it was gospel!!

You apparently do not comprehend the word murder if you think Bush 'murdered' anyone. If Bush is a murderer then so are the rest of us, all of us called for blood that day, including you.

Name calling is what they do since they do not have enough knowledge to post something factual or meaningfull. I am more concerned about the next leader to take over. Its not that cut a dry easy. Keeping in mind, the first official act will be to pull some stunt on South Korea, where our soldiers are stationed. It is also well known they have nukes. Well, the OWS will miss "ils" contribution to the protest there...yep, he donates to the cause, is all over the net....

Nothing more than hyper-macho posturing from the North Koreans. They are trying to tell everybody that despite losing their leader, they still will defend themselves.
