New Unemployment Claims Jump

The number of people applying for unemployment benefits last week jumped to the highest level in three months, a sign that layoffs could be increasing.

The Labor Department says weekly applications rose by 11,000 to a seasonally adjusted 428,000.

The week included the Labor Day holiday. Applications typically drop during short work weeks. In this case, applications didn't drop as much as the department expected, so the seasonally adjusted value rose. A Labor spokesman says the total wasn't affected by Hurricane Irene.

Still, applications appear to be trending up. The four-week average, a less volatile measure, rose for the fourth straight week to 419,500.

Applications need to fall below 375,000 to indicate that hiring is increasing enough to lower the unemployment rate.

There are jobs to be had. You must pass a drug test to be employed. You don't have to pass a drug test to get unemployment or socil services. ????? There are companies trying to get employees, but due to the drug test and people not wanting to work are short employees. It would be nice to hear the WHOLE story once in a while.

Could it be that one trillion dollars later we have nothing to show for it? The election in 2012 will have democrats not showing up to the polls and republicans voting with a vengence. Legacy to the worst president in the history of America, Barrack Hussein Obama. Independents voted for him since he is black, this time they will vote him out by anger.

I cant believe there are no posts on here yet blaming the Republicans and the Tea Party. Considering the Republicans win in NY this week in a heavily Democratic district is a sign that the people are no longer buying the liberal blame game. I guess the Obama administration has awakened a sleeping giant, Democrats who are getting fed up with their own party.

Oh, but don't worry, lucy. Obama's half billion dollar boondoggle will put a job in every American's pocket. Didn't someone else promise a "chicken in every pot"?. Well, this "jobs bill" will be just as empty a promise.

Yes he did promise that. But it took first massive public works projects (TVS, WPA, CCC, etc.) and then finally WWII to get the country out of the depression and back to work. I don't think any of us are ready to go that far yet.

And some moron libterd will post that wars get us out of recession...thats no happening right now...hmmm, we have three of them and still in the tanks....Well, the fact that we sold weapons, tanks, planes, ammos to our allies and every industry in America was producing it...that is what got us out. Also, we supplied our allies with food and everything else under the sun so farmers were producing.
