New Law: 100 Watt Bulbs Illegal In U.S.

It's lights out for one of Thomas Edison's brightest invention.

It's now illegal to sell 100 watt light bulbs made or imported after January first. Manufacturers are beginning to phase out incandescent bulbs, and retailers say when their supplies run out they won't get any more. Though congress recently defunded the ban on the 100 watt bulb, the law remains. Retailers say the newer more efficient bulbs are actually much better bulbs.

"They're great bulbs. We have them in three different types: natural daylight, a white, and a lighter white, so it depends on what you need it for and what area for the brightness," said Former Lighting Manager Christine Lester.

The new energy efficient bulbs cost more up front, but manufacturers say they're cheaper in the long-run because they last longer. Over the next two years manufacturers will phase out the 75, 60 and 40 watt bulbs as well.
